The Macujo Method is a repeated hair-washing routine you do in your own bathroom in the days before a hair follicle test. It starts with Macujo Aloe Rid Shampoo as the deep cleanser, adds a few household steps to open and rinse the hair, and finishes with a test-day wash. This guide covers how the routine is set up, how long to plan for, what to protect, and where its limits are, including what the research says and what to do if you can’t use Aloe Rid.
TL;DR
- The Macujo Method is a multi-wash home routine built around Macujo Aloe Rid Shampoo. The number of washes depends on your use and your timeline, not on a fixed number.
- Start early. Hair tests look back about 90 days, so the routine works best when you begin days ahead, not hours.
- Protect your scalp. Repeated washing is harsh, and skin care is part of the plan.
- No hair detox is guaranteed by science. Independent research on cosmetic treatments and external contamination shows real but variable effects.
- If you want a plan fitted to your hair and test date, we offer a private consultation and a wash calculator.

What the Macujo Method is, in plain terms
The method was developed by Mike Macujo and is built on one idea: drug metabolites and surface residue can be loosened and washed out of the hair shaft if you open the cuticle, cleanse repeatedly, and rinse thoroughly. It is not one product. It is a sequence of washes, with Macujo Aloe Rid Shampoo doing the main cleansing work and a final shampoo used on test day to deal with outside contaminants such as smoke exposure.
People search for the “at home” version because a hair test cannot be dodged with a drink or a quick trick the morning of. Hair is a long record. Labs typically analyze a 1.5-inch sample, which is used to estimate a window of about 90 days, although real detection depends on how fast your hair grows and when you used. Standard growth ranges from 0.7 to 3.6 cm per month, so two people can have very different histories in the same inch and a half of hair.
That is why the routine is repetitive. You are not doing one treatment. You are doing a schedule.
Before you start: what you need to know about your test
Spend ten minutes on facts before you buy anything or wash anything.
- Test date. Count the days. If you have a week or more, you can spread washes out. If you have a day, the plan is compressed. Our 24-hour hair prep checklist covers the short-notice case, and our 10-day hair-first plan covers a longer runway.
- Type of test. Head hair is the usual sample. If you have little or no head hair, labs may use body hair, which has a different window. We explain that in our body hair drug test guide.
- Your use pattern. Occasional and daily use leave different amounts in the hair, so they call for different wash schedules.
- Who is testing you. Pre-employment, random workplace, DOT and probation tests have different rules. See our pages on pre-employment drug test laws, DOT hair marijuana tests, random tests at work and probation tests.
- Hair treatment history. Bleached or dyed hair behaves differently. Cosmetic treatments such as bleaching and dyeing have been found to lower metabolite concentrations in hair by roughly 30% to 60%, depending on the substance and how intense the treatment was. Tell whoever helps you plan if your hair is treated.
The Macujo Method at home, step by step
Below is the general shape of the routine. Your exact schedule should come from the instructions with your products and our wash calculator, because wash counts depend on your use and timeline.
Gather your supplies
The core is Macujo Aloe Rid Shampoo. Around it, the method uses common bathroom and kitchen items: a clarifying astringent with salicylic acid, white vinegar, baking soda and a liquid laundry-style detergent step, as laid out in the original instructions. On test day, a separate shampoo, Zydot Ultra Clean, is used as the last step. You also want rubber gloves, a barrier cream such as petroleum jelly for your hairline and skin, a shower cap and clean towels.
You can buy the authentic shampoo directly: Macujo Aloe Rid Detox Shampoo, a 2-pack bundle if your schedule needs many washes, or the Aloe Rid and Zydot Ultra Clean bundle that covers the cleansing washes and the test-day wash together.
Run the wash sequence
Each wash session follows the same logic, in this order:
- Wet the hair and wash thoroughly with Aloe Rid. Work it into the scalp and all the way down the length you expect to be sampled. Rinse and towel dry.
- Apply the baking soda paste step, massage it in, and rinse.
- Apply the salicylic acid astringent step, leave it for the time stated in your instructions, and rinse.
- Apply the vinegar step and rinse well.
- Finish with the detergent step per the instructions, then rinse thoroughly and towel dry.
The exact timings, quantities and how many sessions per day are in the step-by-step video instructions we provide with our products. We do not recommend improvising on timing, because over-leaving a product on your scalp is how most irritation happens.
Spread the sessions out
Most people do several washes per day for the first days, then taper. A lighter user generally needs fewer total washes than a heavy user, and that is exactly the question the Macujo calculator answers. Do not cram everything into the final night. Hair needs rest between sessions, and your scalp does too.

Do the test-day wash
On the morning of the test, use the final-wash shampoo. Its job is to cleanse outside contaminants, such as smoke residue or contact exposure, rather than to do the heavy lifting of the earlier washes. Then do not apply products, oils or styling gel before you arrive. Plain, clean, dry hair is the goal.
Protecting your hair and scalp
Repeated acidic and alkaline washes strip oils. Expect dryness. A few habits keep the routine tolerable:
- Put barrier cream on your hairline, ears and neck before each session, and wear gloves.
- Rinse longer than you think you need to. Residue causes most of the itching.
- Use a plain conditioner only where your instructions allow it, and not on the final day unless told to.
- Stop and ask for help if you get burning, open sores or heavy redness. See a doctor or dermatologist for broken skin.
The research on cosmetic treatment notes that the strong bases used in hair treatments are expected to cause hair damage. Any aggressive routine carries a tradeoff between how thoroughly you wash and how much stress you put on your hair. A calmer schedule with enough time is nearly always better than a frantic one.
What the science says, and what it doesn’t
We want you to make this decision with open eyes.
Cutoffs are very low. Under federal workplace guidance, the initial hair screening cutoff for marijuana metabolites is 1 pg/mg, with confirmation at 0.1 pg/mg. A picogram is one trillionth of a gram. The tests look for tiny amounts.
Independent evidence is mixed. A review of hair analysis and evasion warns that success from hair cleansers is not guaranteed and that many detox products lean on scientific-sounding language. A laboratory comparison study also shows that results can differ between commercial labs, which is one reason outcomes vary from person to person. We would rather say this plainly than promise you something no honest provider can.
Contamination works in both directions. Research shows that THC and related compounds can reach hair through external contact with cannabis material, so a positive result does not by itself prove consumption. That is part of why the final contamination-focused wash exists, and it matters if you are around smoke but do not use.
Our approach. We treat the method as a serious preparation tool with real variables, not a magic switch. What we add is structure, a calculator and a person to ask. Our owner-backed promise is support: unlimited consultations until you pass your test.

Macujo Method without Aloe Rid: is it possible?
People ask whether they can swap in a regular clarifying shampoo. The method as written is built around Macujo Aloe Rid, and the original instructions say not to substitute it. We cannot vouch for a generic replacement, because it was not the product the routine was designed around, and a different shampoo changes the whole sequence. If you cannot get Aloe Rid in time, the better move is a private consultation with Mike Macujo to work out what is realistic for your date. A shampoo bought at a drugstore the night before is the weakest version of the plan.
Perspective: what we see after 20 years
Most people who contact us wait too long. They treat the test as a one-night problem, when hair is a 90-day record and the routine rewards a calm schedule. The people who are happiest with the process are the ones who count their days, decide how many washes they need, protect their scalp, and ask questions early.
We also see a lot of misinformation. Some sites sell magic, and some sites say nothing works. The truth is in between: the washing routine is demanding, results vary with use history, hair type and lab, and nobody should promise a result. What we can promise is a clear plan, authentic products, step-by-step video instructions and a real person to talk to until you pass. Our guide to the 90-day detection window explains why the 90-day number can mislead and how to think about your own timeline.

Other tests: urine and saliva
Most of this guide is about hair, but the Macujo Method itself is hair-specific. If your test is urine or saliva, the preparation is different and the window is much shorter. We carry separate categories for urine test products and saliva test products, including detox drinks, teas, a detox mouthwash, synthetic urine kits and at-home test kits so you can check yourself first. If your employer follows federal rules, our SAMHSA cutoff levels page explains what the urine thresholds mean. Browse everything on the PassUSA home page.
Ready to build your plan?
If you have a test date, pick your path:
- You want the shampoo now. Start with Macujo Aloe Rid Detox Shampoo, or the Aloe Rid and Zydot bundle if you want the test-day wash included.
- You want it tailored. Book a private consultation with Mike Macujo. We will look at your use, timeline and hair history and set the wash plan with you.
A simple timeline to plan around
| Time before test | What to do |
|---|---|
| 10+ days | Order products, run the calculator, start the washing schedule on a steady pace |
| 3 to 9 days | Complete most washes, protect the scalp, stay out of smoke and contact with cannabis |
| 1 to 2 days | Finish remaining washes, no new products or styling |
| Test morning | Test-day wash only, plain hair, arrive clean |
If you are already inside the last 24 hours, use the drug test tomorrow checklist rather than trying to fit the full plan.
FAQ
How long does the Macujo Method take at home?
Plan on several days. Each session takes a while because of the multiple steps, and you will do several sessions a day early on, then fewer. The calculator helps set the number for your use level, and a consultation can tighten it to your date.
Can I do the Macujo Method without Aloe Rid?
The method was built around Aloe Rid, and the original instructions do not recommend substitutes. A generic shampoo changes the routine, so we cannot stand behind it. If Aloe Rid is not an option for you, talk to us before your test date gets close.
Is the Macujo Method guaranteed to work?
No hair cleansing method is guaranteed, and independent reviewers say so. Results vary with use history, hair and the lab. What we guarantee is support: unlimited consultations until you pass your test.
Can I use the Macujo Method on dyed or bleached hair?
Yes, but tell us first. Cosmetic treatments already change drug concentrations in hair, and treated hair can be more fragile, so the wash plan needs adjusting.
